Jazz Band
Jazz Band is an advanced music class that focuses on various styles of jazz music and improvisation. Generally Rock, Latin, Swing, and Ballads. This group is an auditioned group.
Jazz Band is a zero period class. That means we start before school officially starts. Starting time this year is 7:25 AM.
Jazz Band generally consists of trumpets, trombones, saxophones (Alto, Tenor, Bari), and rhythm section (Piano, Bass, Guitar, Drums).
To be in jazz band you must meet two requirements.
1. Be signed up for the appropriate band (JH Band or Concert Band): The reason we do this is because jazz is not a replacement for learning fundamental music skills, it is an extension of those skills and uses an entirely different set of skills.
2. Audition at the end of the year to win a spot for the following year. Remember that Jazz Band is an advanced class, and being in it may require you to be proficient in your instrument before you can join.
While easier said than done, if you don't make it into jazz band do not feel discouraged or give up. Here are some things you can do to improve your chances for the following year.
- Practice, Practice, Practice. Practice the audition music and practice improvisation.
- Find some jazz you like, and listen to it. How will you be able to play jazz if you don't know what it sounds like?
- Ask for feedback. How can I improve for the next audition?
- Stay in band. That is where we will keep focusing on fundmental playing and strengthening the skills you need to know.
- Find a teacher who teaches private lessons who specializes in your instrument. This is a great way to increase your playing ability.
